Three Ways to Get Attention

DSC_0555

I heard the girls talking while they came in to the house…

“You think your day was bad? I had badminton today and we had to go to the gym. Of course, the seniors from the baseball team came in and started using the weights and then I realized that my water bottle is right by the weight benches!…”

I am blessed to be sharing some words over at The Whatever Girls today!  Come on by to hear how getting attention is easier than I thought.  Click here to read more.

Inspire Me Monday – I Want to Be Photo Shopped!

Happy Monday!

As some of you know, I am starting to write a little more on beauty from the Lord. So often in today’s world, beauty looks like something that you have to work to obtain: getting your make up done flawlessly, working out for hours, and having the perfect eyebrows. (You are welcome for that link!)

Today, I am here to tell you that you are already beautiful!

God created you in His image and he created you his beloved one.

I am my beloved’s and He is mine.

One of my favorite recording artists sings a song about beauty and it has become my theme song for encouraging young girls and their mamas as well! I adore Jonny Diaz and his sweet little family!

His song, More Beautiful You, is the perfect reminder that

There could never be another more beautiful you.”

But as I watched this video, I was also reminded that I want to be photo shopped. No, I don’t mean to whiten my teeth or make my eyes more blue, but I do want God to chisel away at the sin in my life to create in me a clean heart. I want to get rid of the envy, anxiety, and doubt that often comes into my heart.

I want him to continue to shape me, mold me, take out the yuck and replace it with His beauty.

Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;
honor him, for he is your lord.

Psalm 45:11

Friends, we are God’s beautiful masterpieces, and He has wiped away the flaws from our soul with His grace on the cross. That “flawless picture” of a new creation is complete!

Yet, our lives are still in need of His grace every day – his continued photo shopping – to help us to abide in Him in more intimate ways in order to glorify Him in all we do here on earth. To glorify Him like that is truly beautiful!

You are beautiful.

There could never be a more beautiful you.

His grace is your beauty.

May your beauty be found in Him today!

The Blessing of Urgency

happy monday

“Hurry Up!” I hear myself say to my children as I rush around looking for my purse.

“I need my keys,” I say a little more harshly than I want to and yet I continue, “WHO took my keys?!” I yell to no one in particular.

“Do you all have your backpacks? Lunches? Coats?” I continue asking for things that should have been put out the night before, mad at my children for not getting them ready, mad at myself for not making sure they were out and ready, mad at my husband for not making me make sure I made sure they were ready. I was even mad at my in-laws for not pushing my husband into becoming a professional golfer back when he was younger so we could be on vacation right now in the Bahamas. Yes, that last one was a stretch…but I was not in my right mind.

That is what happens when I get stressed.

My voice gets more pitched than Dorothy’s house. My heart starts racing. I suddenly get upset at things that although may be annoying, they certainly do not constitute a harsh voice.

And then, I heard my children starting to get loud, more stressed, yelling at each other, “Who wore my coat?  Where is my basketball?”

I had been on full force since I had gotten up. Dragging myself out of bed with the kids waking me up, a quick shower, three curls of the curling iron, grabbing my clothes, and running out the door to work leaving my husband to make the lunches and make sure the kids really have all that they said they had before they leave for school.

It is a constant rush.

And I then knew what I had to do.

I had to do it.

I had to get up early.

Not just early.

Early.

I needed to fill my heart with Jesus before I tried filling my kids’ hearts and minds.

And I needed to get up early to run (more on that in tomorrow’s post.).

For years, I had been telling myself that I did not get up early to have time with Jesus because:

** I needed my sleep

** I love to dive in to the Word and I often want to spend time looking at other verses and reading more and time suddenly slips away and I do not have time to do that in the morning.

** I have to keep watching the clock and I will be too distracted.

But the real reason was:

I LOVE TO SLEEP.

I always have.  My mama told me that even when I was a baby, I would sleep 20 out of 24 hours. I was.such.a.good.baby.

But I knew it down deep. I needed to have something good in my heart so something good could come out.

“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the law of kindness is on her tongue.” Proverbs 31:26

Y’all kindness was so far away from my tongue this morning.

So, I did  that whole getting up early thing.  And you know what happened?

He gave me the rest I needed.

I found ways to see His Word in living action all day.

I found that my time was enough because His timing is perfect.

I found my sweet kind voice once again. And I also laid out the clothes the night before.

It was going to be a good day.

Freedom Friday – Week Three – Peer Pressure

Hey Y’all and Welcome to Freedom Friday!

It is not just me welcoming you today. I have my daughter and my niece on the blog today sharing what peer pressure means to them. We had such fun doing this. The girls thought we should add the bloopers as well! Maybe someday. It only took about four takes. Not bad for us newbies!

If you are reading Your Sacred Yes along with us, you know we are exploring how we can find freedom, passion, and joy in our everyday lives by giving God our sacred yes!  Even if you are not doing the book study, you know the need for approval is everywhere we look!  Too often for me, I put more thought into how the people around me are going to perceive me rather than what God thinks of me and who I am in Him.

I need to remember my worth is not in what others think of me,

but what God did for me and who I am in Him.

These last two chapters were filled with practical tips on how to identify and acknowledge the gaps between man’s opinion and God’s opinion.

Check out today’s video. And please excuse the beach hair! :)

The Your Scared Yes email for today shares how I tried to please others instead of God. If you are not receiving those, go on and sign up at www.susielarson.com.

How about you? In what ares of your life are you more worried about man’s opinion of you than God’s? How do you see peer pressure affecting you? Please join the conversation. Constantly striving for approval affects us all and I am thankful for a community that can share and encourage one another!

Please share what you are struggling with or how you are finding yourself victorious with God’s help! Just connect below in the comments or feel free to email me any prayer requests.

May you find beauty in giving God Your Sacred Yes today!

XOXO,

Angie

Freedom Friday – Your Sacred Yes – Week 2

Week2

Rest.

It so often seems selfish to take time  for ourselves, but just as Jesus took time away from the crowds to go be with His Father, we need time to refresh ourselves in order to give God our sacred yes.

Reading through the book Your Sacred Yes has given me the encouragements and tools I need to make every decision count. It has shown me a way to make my yes be meaningful. Sacred.

It is a yes that will not leave us drained but full with expectancy and hope for what we can do for God.

But sometimes, our plans to get rest leave us feeling even more stressed!

For example, planning a vacation can be a way to get much needed rest, and it can be a chance to give God your sacred yes in a very specific way.

Yet, vacations can evoke feelings of anxiety and stress and I will give you one word why…

ROADTRIP!

Yes, our family usually drives everywhere we go and we don’t just go to a bed and breakfast a couple hours away.  No, we think it is fun to go across the country or at least half way across the country to the ocean!

After my husband and I have traveled with our children for this many years, we don’t have it down perfectly, but we have picked up a few things that allow us to make even a ride on the car a way that we can choose to create an environment where we can still give God our sacred yes.

So, here are 5 Tips to Making Road Trips Awesome

(I did record a video for Freedom Friday, but it may or may not have been way too many takes since I did it with my children while we were on vacation. Actually we still are. Right now. It was after 5 hours in the car already, do things got silly a little. It will be edited and uploaded soon!)

car ride

(Please notice happy smiles and sleeping children in back.)

SLEEP

If at all possible on a long road trip, plan for some of your driving time to be while the kids are asleep. We leave early , early, early in the morning so the kids can get in the car and go right back to sleep and then we can have a few hours of quiet in the car.  It also works for the end of the day. Quiet nightime rides are good for the soul and canlead to many deep conversations between spouses. Just don’t discuss too many deep things after 10. Ain’t nobody got time for sleepy emotions during a debate, oops, I mean conversation.

SCHEDULE

Being a teacher, this one is easy for me to plan, but sometimes can be hard to implement, yet, when we do, our car rides are so.much.better.

I plan out each block of time with an activity. It can be as vague as “Electronics Time” or as specific as “Stopping at Highway 64 Rest Stop for Lunch,” but what it does is gives the kids a reference for what is coming up and an ending time which helps to break up the many hours in the car. I will schedule time to read, “play” electronics, color, play car games, look at magazines, watch the movie, snack time, etc.

And as in everything here in this space, there is room for grace, so y’all, if your electronics time goes on for a few hours, no judgement here!  We are all about keeping the peace on road trips!

SIGHTSEEING

When the children were younger, we just wanted to get to the place of vacation and get there as fast as we could. As they have gotten older, we have realized that it makes a trip a lot less stressful and more fun if you add something on the way. It can be as simple as a fun stop to the very first McDonald’s (This seems to be a recurring theme.) to stopping at Laura Ingall Wider’s farmhouse.  It may not always work out, but if it does, it is always have more joy in the journey!

SNACKS

Kids are happier when they have full tummies. Enough said.

SINGING

When I do finally upload the video, you will see a very blooper filled attempt at showing the world our family singing in the car. Songs have a way of bringing families together whether it is a song on the radio that everyone knows or a bedtime song that their Papa sang each one of them while they were babies and it makes everyone smile thinking of Him.  It also gives a mental break that is good for a healthy heart as well.

Uh, and one more bonus one:

TRADITIONS

(It didn’t start with “S.” Hence, it is a bonus one)

These are the things do on every car trip that the kids can count on. This is what the children will remember and tell their children about. It may be stopping at a certain Eagle Tower and climbing it on the way. OR it may be a certain ice cream shop where you always get the.best.chocolate milk shakes. It may be a car game like “I Am Going Camping And I Am Bringing…” (longest name of a car game ever!) or giving little Dollar Story gifts every hour. Anything that evokes memories of togetherness and fun.

These are all ways that remind me of the truth that Susie shares in Your Scared Yes,

When we are sloppy with our yes, we miss out on God’s best. {click to tweet}

Even in travelling, we can give God our planned and sacred yes so that He can give us His best. May you have a beautiful Friday and if you see our family on the road, honk really loud. We may not hear you at first because we might be singing!

XOXO,

Angie

Inspire Me Monday – Week Thirty Nine

Happy Presidents’ Day!

A day to celebrate the great ones that led our country.

A day to remember all the things they stood for while they were president.

And a day to have a day off from school!

Both are wonderful things!

As I reflected on the reason for this holiday, I also reflected on how I want to be remembered when I am gone.

Then I got even more reflective, and thought how do I want to be known right now.

You see,  I am trying to teach my children that what is on the inside is more important than what is on the outside, but as I was watching the commercials during the Saturday Night Live 40 Year Reunion last night, I was reminded that what you look like on the outside really does matter:

{Disclaimer: I am using this to make my point, but the bird comment made my husband and I laugh out loud}

{Another disclaimer:  My husband has a truck.}

Isn’t that just funny?! And the whole message must be true – I mean, it has to be, we saw it on TV!

But in reality, it is often true – that appearance and what people think about you depends on outer things.

I used to think it was wrong to care about what people thought.

That is how I understood the Bible when it said:

Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

~ Ephesians 6:7

And yet, when our children go to school or to a friend’s house, we tell them that they are a reflection of our family and of Jesus.  I am expecting others to notice the behaviors of my children. When I dress them in matching clothes, I am expecting people to notice the cute coordinating colors which used to happen a lot more.  It is VERY hard to find things that work for a 14 year old teen girl and a 9 year old boy!

And yet, I am discovering more and more that what is in your heart will change what is on the outside. So what is on the inside is important, but what is on the outside will reflect the state of the heart.

And that is important too.  You see, Jesus grew in favor with both God and men.

Luke 2:52 says that  “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”

I do not want to be remembered for our truck, but I do want to be known as the mom who had room in her car to drive lots of kids to basketball and who always asked about the bummer and bests of their days.

I do not want to be remembered for the cute orange outfits that my kids wore, but I do want them to be remembered as being clothed in kindness.

I don’t want to be remembered as the mom with the Pinterest perfect snacks. Okay, let’s be honest, that ain’t never gonna happen. I do want to be remembered as the mom who was always ready to listen and who had some offering of food: Saltines and butter are a huge hit over here!

I want to serve others as though I am serving the Lord, and I want to serve the Lord well.

I want to be remembered as one who made time for others.

What do you want to be remembered for today?

Inspire Me Monday – Week Thirty – Six

o-WOMAN-RUNNING-facebook

{photo credit}

I hear the beating of my heart rushing in my ears, and I feel the sweat beading on my back.

And I don’t know if I can make it.

I trained. I put in the time to stretch tight muscles, ran when it was dark {okay, this totally means in the evening, not the wee hours of the morning, let’s just be honest. . .}, and chose water over an ice cold Pepsi.

It isn’t even a long run, but to me, it is a run to prove something. That I can.

But I am finding that I can’t.

At least I can’t alone.

That is when I hear, “C’mon. . . you can do it. Just a little bit more.”

And I believe the words of encouragement.

I believe that I can.

Just because I heard that I could.

Because when I try to do it alone, I find myself making excuses.

No matter what it is I am trying to do.

They can be excuses from my head:

“I have too many other things to do.”

“I have never done this before.”
“Other people have done it already, why should I even try?!”

Or the lies of the world:

“You are not good enough.”

“You will never finish.”

“She is so much better than you, why not let her do it instead?!”

But when I hear the words of someone else believing in me,

I actually believe I can.

And so today. . .

I will continue to run:

To choose patience over a flared temper.

To write one more chapter.

To see my kids as flawed sweet beings just being who they are created to be. . .children.

And to give myself that same grace.

And I will continue to run.

Even if I am the ONLY one who stops to get water during the 5K!

So what will you choose to continue to do today?

I would love to know!

I am so excited to announce another part of today’s awesome inspiration….

It is a Giveaway bonanza!

I want to share all sorts of happy joy and since I cannot be with each of you in person, I am using this giveaway to make y’all happy on this Monday morning!

Like I said,  I am starting to run.

You see, a few months ago, if I said that, I might have thrown up a little in my mouth, but now, I am actually excited.

I used to get really bad shin splints, but for some reason, as I have started to do just a little bit at a time, I am finding that the pain is not coming.

When I just take little steps, I find that I can do it.

So I have just a few special things that can give you little steps in the right direction of parenting, loving Jesus more, knowing God more fully in every aspect of your life, and just adding beauty around home and sweet self.

Here is what is included in this week’s giveaway:

kingdom-woman-by-tony-evans I have met Chrystal Evans Hurst and she is the real deal!  She desires to follow God and shares her stories of grace in the midst of real life which includes the chaos of kids and the desire to embrace the purpose God has in store for her. Reading her words (and her daddy’s wise words) will inspire you to realize the power that every Kingdom Woman has in a mighty God.

who are all

And for a humorous read on the lighter side of mothering, I have included this amazing book by Faith Bogdan. She is a mama that shares from the trenches. And even in using that word “trenches”, I smile because her daughter will actually be in the trenches as she desires to join the marines and Faith is experiencing a whole unique kind of trust right now.

And now for something for your home:

red letter

This is a small piece of beautiful wall art from Red Letter Words and it is perfect for how I feel about running lately. . .when I am focusing on the amount of work it takes to run, I cannot handle it, but when I focus on the completion of the run, I find the joy. In the same way, when we focus on what God wants, that is when we find the true joy that is meant for us to have in Him.

together necklace                                                               {photo credit}

The last gift is a beautiful piece of jewelery from Lisa Leonard. It is the simple and classy Together necklace. It is just a little something to help you remember that everything is better when you have a friend or a community to stand by your side.

Everyone that comments or links up or LIKES my Angie Ryg Facebook page will be entered to win this whole set of awesomeness!

When You Feel Like You Are The Only One With Yuck

20150106-Ryg-Beloved

She takes me aside and in broken English she whispers, “Thank you for making me know I am not alone.”

We were standing hand in hand and the sweat was still dripping down my back with the India heat pushing my billowy flowered dress into the back of my knees.

Her dark hair was swept up into a beautiful braid and wisps were sticking to the side of her face as she leaned in to bring me into her secret.

“I feel so alone.”

My heart breaks as I know the feeling that soaks into my soul all too often.

She then goes on to say, “I like that you shared your yuck with us.”

And we connected right there, in spite of different languages, different clothes, and different cultures.

Because y’all…

No matter what we have been through, we are chosen, forgiven, and called Holy daughters of the King.

No matter our yuck!

And truly I had shared my yuck.

Do you ever feel like you are the only one with Yuck?  I am blessed to be guest posting over at (in)courage today! Come on over and join the conversation over at (in)courage about what God does with our yuck…

Inspire Me Monday – Week Thirty Four

knotCan I tell you a secret?

I am tired.

I am wanting another week of Christmas vacation before going into the “reality” of schoolwork, working, the busy of it all.

I am wanting more of the rest, more of the wonder of it, more of something.

I don’t even know what that something is and it causes an emptiness that I cannot totally explain.

And my heart is breaking with the heaviness of it all.

Different things seems to break my heart every day.

The choices I make.

The choices my children make.

The choices complete strangers make.

And every day there are times when I want to do something over.

To make it more perfect.

As the babes sleep through the night or my little one stops asking me to marry him.

To realize that when that moment was happening, it was the last and I needed to savor it more than I did.

But then, I realize that is a world with me in the center of it.

And when we are the center of our days, when we stand first before the light, there is no room for illumination.

For when we look inward, there is no longing for the outward.

And yet, there is still that broken heart.

As Ann so beautifully puts it:

“The secret way to heal a broken heart is to let love leak out like an ocean through all the cracks.”

To give until your grieving is dulled by the beauty of joy.

To hope until the wonder isn’t painful.

To love until the brokenness becomes a part of another.

Because maybe we were not made to be fixed right now. Maybe, just maybe, we are not called to help heal each other, but to join each other in the brokenness, because there is only One who was crushed so that He can heal us fully.

And He is just waiting for you.

To heal our hurt.

To help our doubt.

To forgive our yuck.  And if you think you are the only one with yuck, come back tomorrow when I talk about my yuck.

But for now, be inspired by the One who loves you no matter what!

And share your inspiration as well!

Here are a few tips to make this easy peasy:
